YouTube changes public view counting
YouTube Is Changing What Counts as a View
YouTube says that starting August 24, views will count from the first frame of playback across Shorts, regular videos, podcasts, and livestreams. That sounds like a small accounting change, but it will make headline view totals less useful for comparing audience attention.
Creators will still see “engaged views” in Analytics, and YouTube says the change will not alter earnings or Partner Program eligibility. For science communicators, I would treat the public number as a reach measure, not an audience-quality measure. A video can be counted quickly without anyone staying for the explanation, especially when the opening frame is doing the work of a thumbnail.
The practical fix is probably boring: report both numbers when discussing performance. The public counter tells us who started watching. Engaged views tell us more about who stayed.
