The Best Repair Cafe Tool Is a Folding Table

At yesterday’s repair cafe, the most useful piece of equipment was not the soldering iron or the tiny screwdriver set. It was the folding table by the entrance, where people could pause, explain what had stopped working, and decide whether to stay.

That little bit of welcome matters. Some visitors brought a lamp. Some brought questions. One person only wanted to watch for ten minutes, which absolutely counts.

Repair events work better when they feel less like a test and more like a neighbourhood kitchen: practical, low-cost, and nobody embarrassed by not knowing the answer. Also, someone please invent a way to stop loose screws migrating into every pocket I own.
