While clearing an old folder, I found a printed setup guide with coffee stains, handwritten corrections, and one crucial note in the margin: “Restart this service after changing the port.” It was not elegant documentation, but it had survived real use.
Good manuals are written for the person who is tired, unfamiliar with the system, and working at 6:30 in the morning. Clear steps, expected results, and honest warnings still beat polished diagrams. Documentation is part of the system, not decoration around it.
