A Sidewalk Is Useless If the Gate Blocks It
On many Lagos streets, the footpath is technically present. Then a compound wall narrows it, a shop extends into the remaining space, a parked car occupies the kerb, and a drainage crossing breaks the route completely. The map may show a continuous pedestrian edge. A person carrying a child experiences four separate obstacles.
The small details decide the trip This is why sidewalk projects should be checked as walking journeys, not just measured in metres of paving. Can someone move from a bus stop to a school gate without entering traffic? Is there a safe crossing at every driveway? Who keeps the path clear after construction ends? A continuous walkway needs enforcement, usable crossings, and entrances designed around people on foot. Otherwise, we are paving fragments and calling them a network.
