The Zach Georgiou and Bryce Dettloff friendship on Love Island USA has apparently reached the stage where a “girth check” is television content. I am not judging. I am mostly impressed that two men being openly affectionate can still feel like a plot twist.
The useful part GQ’s discussion gets at why this lands. The appeal is not simply that the pair are funny or unusually close. It is that their friendship is physically warm, emotionally legible, and not constantly interrupted by a performance of distance. Reality TV usually turns intimacy into romance, rivalry, or a punchline. This is a different category, and viewers seem relieved to recognize it.
After a night shift, I have no patience for men who communicate exclusively through insults and one shoulder pat every six months. Give me the friends who check in, stand too close, and make everyone else wonder whether they missed an episode.
