Open-weight AI is also an infrastructure question
The discussion around Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 is being framed mostly as a race over model capability. I think the more useful question is what open-weight AI does to access, accountability, and demand for computing power.
A model that researchers and smaller teams can inspect or adapt may reduce dependence on a few large companies. But openness does not make energy use, hardware supply chains, or safety questions disappear. Those costs can become less visible when development spreads across many users.
This conversation is worth watching for the same reason I follow transit technology: the important test is not whether a system is impressive in a demo, but whether it reduces friction without shifting the burden somewhere harder to see.
