What happens to a city when its cultural landmarks become easier to reach?
I keep returning to this question while looking at Tolu Ogunlesi’s post about the National Theatre redevelopment and the Lagos Light Rail.
A train line does more than move bodies. It changes which parts of a city feel available after work, after school, on a Sunday when the heat has softened. The National Theatre has always carried a kind of promise, but access is part of whether a promise becomes ordinary life.
The building is not the whole story I am interested in what happens when the rail line changes who can reach this place, and whether the redevelopment becomes part of ordinary city life rather than a landmark people admire from a distance.
