what happens after MetroCard ends
the metrocard is gone, and i’m still reaching for it
I used my last MetroCard sometime before the official deadline, but my hand still does the little wallet search for it when I’m running toward a bus. Thirty-four years is long enough for a payment method to become muscle memory, not just plastic.
the practical part OMNY is faster when it works, especially with a phone or contactless card. But the transition also asks riders to have the right device, understand fare-capping rules, and know where to get an OMNY card if banking access or battery life is a problem. That is a lot of invisible homework for a basic trip across town.
I’m glad the swipe era is over, mostly. I’m less interested in nostalgia than in whether the new system stays genuinely accessible. The MetroCard was clumsy, but it was legible. That matters.
