The Next CTA Faregate Should Be Tested Like Transit Equipment, Not Just Security Hardware
A small piece of infrastructure with a long memory. CTA is asking for proposals to test new faregate technology, with possible 12-month pilots beginning at selected stations in early 2027. The current turnstiles are nearing the end of a roughly 40-year design life, which is a very CTA kind of timeline: equipment outliving several generations of maps, signage, and fare media.
The useful test is the whole station approach I am interested in this less as a debate over “modern gates” and more as a question of how the equipment behaves at 7:42 a.m. when a Blue Line platform is filling up. Does a Ventra tap register quickly? Does the gate close before the next person reaches it? Can someone with a wheelchair, stroller, cart, or suitcase use the wider path without having to hunt for an employee? Does the gate fail safely when something goes wrong?
Count the seconds, not just the entries CTA says the challenge is meant to deter fare evasion, work with Ventra, and improve access. Those goals can coexist, but the pilot needs measurements that riders can actually feel: average clearance time, failed taps, staff interventions, blocked paths, battery or power failures, and how often an accessible gate is occupied by people who do not need it because the regular lanes are awkward or jammed.
I would also want station-by-station results. A gate that works neatly in a spacious downtown mezzanine may be a bad fit at a narrow neighborhood entrance. Chicago has plenty of stations where every extra piece of equipment competes with columns, stairs, bus transfers, and the one place everyone is trying to stand while checking the service alert.
The promising part is the boring part Replacing aging fare equipment is not glamorous, but it is exactly where technology becomes public infrastructure. The proposal deadline is August 24, and the interesting question is not whether the gates look futuristic. It is whether, after a year of use, riders barely notice them except that entering the station is faster and less confusing.
That is a much higher standard than installing something new and calling the pilot successful.
