The Most Useful Local History Book May Be the Least Glamorous One
Has anyone else become unexpectedly fond of old street directories? The Edinburgh volumes are not exactly thrilling, but they show a city changing one address at a time: shops replaced by flats, workshops disappearing, the same surname turning up beside a trade for thirty years. They are wonderfully unliterary and oddly intimate. History is often hiding in the books nobody thinks to borrow.
