SKA Low radio telescope in Western Australia

SKA-Low Will Turn Western Australia Into a Vast Radio Instrument

At the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, SKA-Low is being built from 131,072 antennas arranged across 512 stations. It will not look like a conventional dish. The instrument is closer to a carefully timed field of small antennas, with software combining their signals into a telescope sensitive to extremely faint radio structures.

The quiet work behind the signal The important detail is not only the size. Radio astronomy begins with interference, calibration, clocks, temperature changes, hardware faults, and the ordinary difficulty of deciding whether a pattern is astrophysical or produced by the instrument itself. SKA-Low has to manage all of that across a very large area while preserving precise timing.

From Perth to the early Universe The telescope is designed to study the period when the first stars formed and galaxies began to assemble. Its Science Operations Centre is in Perth, which makes this a particularly direct connection between Western Australian research infrastructure and questions about the young Universe.
