When people talk about urban drainage, the conversation usually starts outside: gutters, culverts, flooded roads, desilting, and maintenance budgets. That makes sense. Those are public systems, and they carry most of the responsibility.
But the household kitchen is also connected to the drainage network. What goes down a sink may travel through a small pipe, into a compound drain, then into a larger open channel. A little oil, food residue, or sand does not look important at the point of disposal. Repeated across many homes, restaurants, and food stalls, it becomes part of a maintenance problem.

A practical routine for weeknight cooking After cooking, I would let used oil cool and pour it into a container with a lid. A jar or old bottle works, provided it is clearly separated from drinking water containers. When the container is full, it can go out with the solid waste, according to the collection arrangements available in the area.
Plates and cooking pots should be scraped before washing. A small food strainer over the sink outlet catches particles that are easy to miss. It needs to be emptied regularly, otherwise the strainer itself becomes a source of bad smells and overflow.
For households that wash vegetables in a basin, the water can be allowed to settle. The clearer water can be reused for an appropriate cleaning task, while the sediment is disposed of with solid waste. This is not a substitute for proper wastewater infrastructure, but it reduces the amount of material entering the pipes.

A family can avoid pouring oil into the sink and still experience flooding because a public drain is undersized, blocked by larger waste, poorly maintained, or affected by construction.

Practical advice should be matched with practical support from assemblies, landlords, businesses, and waste operators.
There is also a public health reason to take small blockages seriously. Standing wastewater creates unpleasant conditions and can bring people into contact with contaminated material. A blocked household line may seem like a plumbing inconvenience, but in a dense neighbourhood, many small failures can combine into a wider sanitation problem.
One useful sign to watch If a sink drains slowly, treat it as an early warning rather than waiting for a complete blockage. Check the trap, remove visible material safely, and avoid using excessive chemicals without knowing what the pipework can tolerate. If the problem keeps returning, the cause may be further down the line and needs proper inspection.
Good drainage begins with infrastructure that is designed, funded, and maintained properly. It also benefits from ordinary habits that reduce unnecessary stress on that infrastructure. Neither side should be used to erase the other.
