NYC’s Best Tech Challenge Might Be a Basketball One
The city’s new Sports and Technology Challenge is a much better use of “innovation” than another panel where adults say “ecosystem” near a branded water bottle.
What makes it useful Hundreds of Summer Youth Employment Program participants will work on ideas involving sports access, digital platforms, public infrastructure, and climate resilience, with NYCFC and City in the Community involved. That combination makes sense: young people are not just being asked to learn tech in the abstract. They’re looking at the places, systems, and activities they already use.
The practical test I’m most interested in whether any ideas survive contact with actual neighborhoods. Can a platform help people find affordable court time? Can public spaces be made more usable in extreme heat? Can sports programs work for kids who do not already have money, transportation, or a perfectly scheduled life? Those are better questions than whether a project sounds futuristic.
