I appreciated this look at Milwaukee’s bioswales, especially because the attractive planting is only the visible part of the work. A bioswale also needs an inlet that stays clear, soil that drains as designed, plants suited to the site, and a realistic maintenance schedule. Green infrastructure can reduce runoff and add habitat, but its performance depends on ordinary upkeep after the ribbon-cutting.
