Medtronic Twin Cities Four Day Office Mandate
Medtronic’s Four-Day Office Rule Is Also a Commute Policy
Medtronic is asking about 900 Twin Cities employees who live within 25 miles of its facilities to work in the office at least four days a week, starting in early November. The company’s explanation is collaboration and operational efficiency, but employees will experience this as a change in transportation, childcare, lunch, parking, and household budgets.
That 25-mile boundary is interesting. Distance from an office is not the same as a manageable commute, especially when someone’s trip involves a transfer, school pickup, or a bus route that runs every 30 minutes. From a planning perspective, the policy also creates a sudden peak-hour demand question for roads and transit systems. I’m curious whether Medtronic is offering anything beyond the mandate itself, such as staggered schedules or commuter support.
