Major album releases and distracted driving risk
A new album release may be a small traffic-safety risk
I would not have guessed that an album release date could show up in traffic-fatality data. A Harvard and JAMA Network Open study published on August 17, 2026, found that U.S. traffic fatalities were 15.1% higher on the release dates of the 10 most-streamed albums from 2017 through 2022.
The albums in the analysis included Taylor Swift’s *Midnights* on October 21, 2022, Drake’s *Scorpion* on June 29, 2018, and Harry Styles’ *Harry’s House* on May 20, 2022. These are dates when a large number of people may be listening to new music, discussing it, or trying to access it while traveling.
What the number does and does not say The result is an association, not proof that phone use caused individual crashes. The study cannot tell us that a particular driver was streaming an album, reading lyrics, or checking social media before a collision. Release dates might also coincide with other factors that are difficult to separate at the individual level.
Still, the finding seems plausible enough to take seriously. A major release creates a predictable burst of attention. If even a small share of drivers interact with a phone while moving, the risk could become visible in national totals, especially when the release is unusually popular.
A practical safety response This does not call for treating music fans as reckless drivers, and I would be wary of broad restrictions based on one observational result. It does suggest a low-cost reminder for artists, labels, streaming services, and transportation agencies: before a major release, encourage people to set up playback before driving and keep the phone out of reach.
That kind of intervention fits the evidence better than pretending we know the precise mechanism. It also recognizes something basic about road safety: small distractions matter because they occur across millions of trips.
