Louisiana Reports Its First Human West Nile Case of the 2026 Season
The Louisiana Department of Health reported the state’s first human West Nile virus case of the 2026 mosquito season on July 17. The announcement is outside the current news window, but it is still useful summer information for anyone spending time outdoors, especially around standing water.
A reminder I keep hearing from neighborhood folks is that mosquito prevention is not only a backyard issue. Containers on balconies, clogged gutters, toys left in yards, and saucers beneath plant pots can all hold enough water for mosquitoes. Emptying those small pools regularly, using repellent, and checking screens are boring measures, but they are the practical ones.
The state notice has the symptoms and prevention guidance. I’m curious whether local block groups are finding it easier to get rid of standing water this year, or whether the same trouble spots keep returning.
