A useful test for Kirkcaldy’s roads budget
Fife Council has approved £1.56 million for roads and related work in the Kirkcaldy area during 2026 - 27. The list includes a new pedestrian crossing on Hendry Road, footway and lighting improvements on Balmoral Drive, and resurfacing on the B9157 towards Aberdour and at Valley Gardens.
The detail I’ll be watching The money matters, but so will the standard of the finished work. A crossing is only useful if people can reach it safely, the kerbs are properly accessible and sightlines are clear. Footway work needs to deal with drainage and uneven edges, not simply create a tidy-looking strip for a few months.
Maintenance is part of the decision I’m also interested in how the council will explain priorities, timings and future maintenance. Preventive work is less disruptive than waiting for potholes, failed lighting or damaged paving to become complaints, but residents need enough information to see whether that approach is actually being followed.
