What New York Looks Like When the Cars Disappear
On Saturday, August 8, Manhattan’s Summer Streets will temporarily give much of its street space to walkers, cyclists, runners, performers, and community programs. NYC DOT lists the open hours as 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
I’m interested in the small visual changes: how people occupy an intersection when they are not waiting for a signal, where strangers stop to watch something, and which gestures appear when nobody has to keep one eye on traffic. A courthouse reveals order through seating and posture. An open street may reveal it through movement instead.
The useful drawing challenge is not the spectacle. It is deciding what remains when the street returns to normal.
