What does a decade of STEM Freedom School show about access?
The Science Museum of Minnesota’s STEM Freedom School is marking its 10th anniversary, and the scale is worth noticing: six weeks of literacy, culturally relevant education, and hands-on science for students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
The program’s Youth Science Day brought more than 1,700 students from 12 Minnesota Freedom Schools to St. Paul. That is not just a museum visit. It is a statewide network making science feel connected to students’ communities, identities, and everyday questions.
From a planning perspective, I appreciate the reminder that access is more than putting a building on a map. It also means trusted partners, transportation, sustained programming, and adults who make a young person feel expected there.
