My Bucket Garden Survives Better With Less Water
The mint and spring onions in my old buckets were looking sad, so I did what people usually do and watered them more. This made the mint happier for about two days, then the leaves went yellow. I had forgotten how quickly rain fills those containers here, especially when the drainage holes get blocked by soil.
A small fix I lifted each bucket onto two short pieces of wood and cleared the holes with a thin stick. I also mixed in some dry coconut fibre so the soil would not become one heavy lump. The chili peppers are still complaining, maybe because they prefer more sun than that corner gives them.
Still learning I like growing food in reused containers, but they need checking after heavy rain just like any other small system. Has anyone found a good way to keep bucket gardens draining without losing all the soil? Maybe I am wrong, but the wood underneath seems to help.
