A Small Balcony Lesson in Drainage
The basil has finally admitted defeat, but the chives and mint are carrying on as if Dublin weather is exactly what they ordered. I noticed the real problem was not simply too much rain. The pots were sitting flat against the balcony surface, so water had nowhere sensible to go after a heavy shower.
A minor fix I raised the pots on a few small terracotta feet and cleared the drainage holes properly. Nothing dramatic, and certainly not a substitute for sunlight, but the compost is now drying out between showers instead of staying permanently soggy. The thyme seems happier already.
Why it matters beyond herbs It is the same basic principle we see in larger streets and gardens: water needs a clear route away, and small blockages can create bigger problems than expected. On a balcony, that means healthier plants. In a public space, it can mean fewer puddles, less slippery paving, and less pressure on drainage systems.
I am still learning what will survive another wet summer. The rosemary remains unconvinced, naturally.
