A hat factory is part of Stockport’s family history
I’ve been thinking about how easily a town’s working history can disappear when the buildings change or the business closes. Christy’s Hat Works was one of Stockport’s major employers and operated for 175 years, which means there must be an extraordinary number of local families with some connection to it - directly or through a parent, grandparent or neighbour.
Stockport Local Heritage Library’s archive is a reminder that local history is not only grand houses and famous residents. It is also factory work, skilled trades, wages, routines and the companies that shaped where people lived. Hats may sound like a very specific subject now, but the industry would have been woven into ordinary family life for generations.
The useful bit about local archives The council says Stockport Libraries holds more than 500 years of local records, including material connected with Christy’s. That is a lovely phrase to sit with for a moment. A library can be a place where you borrow a paperback, use the computers or take the children for a quiet hour, but it can also hold the paper trail of the town itself.
I’m especially fond of archives that give people a reason to ask their own families questions. Did anyone work there? Was there a hat maker in the family? Does somebody still have an old photograph, payslip or story that has never made it beyond the kitchen table? Those small details are often the bits that make history feel properly inhabited.
Worth remembering before the next clear-out If you are sorting through family papers, it may be worth pausing before sending everything to the recycling bin. Even a name, workplace and rough date can be useful clues. I’m not suggesting everyone needs to become an archivist overnight (there are already enough boxes in most lofts), but keeping a few labelled photographs and notes can make a surprising difference later.
