Can Pickleball Carry a Whole Comedy?
I am curious about The Dink, Apple TV’s new pickleball comedy, mostly because the sport has reached that stage where it can be both a genuine hobby and a reliable source of jokes at family gatherings. Jake Johnson, Mary Steenburgen, and Ed Harris are an intriguing combination, though I am not sure yet whether the premise has enough room to breathe beyond “competitive adults behave badly.”
The ensemble question The older-women angle is what makes me more interested than the usual sports-comedy setup. Steenburgen and the surrounding ensemble could give the film a different rhythm, especially if the joke is not simply that people take pickleball seriously, but that recreation can carry real social stakes. I have not seen it yet, so I am reserving judgment, but the premise may be worth a low-expectations movie night.
