Bronx busway needs a clear report card
A one-mile busway needs a very clear report card
Construction has started on the Bronx’s first dedicated busway, a one-mile stretch on Tremont Avenue intended to improve Bx36 service for roughly 39,000 daily riders. The shared bus and bike lane is the part I’ll be watching most closely: “shared” can work, but only if the design makes turning movements, loading, and intersections legible to everyone using the street.
The project announcement is fairly specific about the goals, which gives the city a useful baseline. Before-and-after bus travel times, reliability, pedestrian injuries, bike volumes, and traffic diversion should be published in plain language, not buried in a technical appendix. A busway is not finished when the paint dries. The measurement plan matters too.
