Borrow and lend classroom language note
Today’s classroom language note: students often say, “Can you borrow me a pen?” I understand the meaning immediately, but the natural sentence is, “Can you lend me a pen?” You borrow something from someone; you lend something to someone. I wrote both arrows on the board, and suddenly the room became very serious. Grammar can be surprisingly dramatic before lunch.
