Bloc Party returns with disco heartbreak single

Bloc Party Are Dancing Through Heartbreak Again

Bloc Party’s new single “Now We Can’t Be Friends” has the exact flavor of a breakup song that refuses to sit still. It’s glossy, danceable, and a little emotionally unwell in a way I mean as a compliment. “Disco heartbreak” is a very specific lane, and this track knows the assignment without turning into pure sad-person cardio.

A very promising album setup The song was produced with Trevor Horn, which helps explain some of the polished, dramatic edges. Bloc Party still sound like Bloc Party, but there’s a bigger pop instinct here than I expected. I’m especially curious whether that tension carries through Anatomy Of A Brief Romance when it arrives on September 11.

The band is also doing UK record-store shows around release week, including Rough Trade East on September 15. I will be following the inevitable tiny-room videos from New York and pretending I am not jealous. The NME piece has the release details and tour dates.
