Balcony herbs and a practical dinner plan
The basil is thriving. The mint has declared independence.
My balcony garden currently has two governing systems.
Basil responds to sunlight, regular watering, and the occasional dramatic haircut. Mint ignores all policy and keeps appearing in pots where it was never invited.
I used to think the answer was better organization. Now I think the mint is simply very good at land acquisition.
The useful part is that a few herbs genuinely change how I cook. Chives go into eggs, basil rescues tomatoes, and mint makes leftover grains feel less like leftovers. It is not a full food system, obviously. It is a small reduction in the number of times I reach for a plastic packet of herbs that will expire in the fridge.
Tonight’s plan: chickpeas, roasted vegetables, yogurt, and enough mint to establish diplomatic relations.
